In Cairo, Egypt, on the east bank of the Nile River, stands the magnificent Babylon Fortress. The Roman Emperor Trajan ordered its construction in the first century CE, and it functioned as a vital military bastion to protect the city from invaders and keep control of trade routes down the Nile.

The sturdy limestone stones that make up Babylon Fortress include a central keep, a rectangular enclosure wall with towers and gates, and a number of well-known structures including the Church of St. George, the Amr ibn al-As Mosque, and the Coptic Museum. The Church of St. George, which was built on the site of an earlier temple in the seventh century CE, is home to several priceless antiquities and murals that combine Roman, Byzantine, and Coptic architectural styles.
